Cottage cheese is often not the first pick when it comes to your weekly shop. Whilst most people have heard of it, not many many people even know what it tastes like! It’s a real shame since cottage cheese is such a versatile food! By adding different ingredients, you can make it sweet or savoury!
Cottage is cheese is one of my favourite foods and you can guarantee that I have it in my fridge right now! I eat it weekly in so many different ways! In this article, i’ll start with the basics; what this delicious dairy product tastes like, what its health benefits are and then i’ll share some of my favourite cottage cheese recipes.
So let’s begin! Cottage cheese: What does it taste like and what can you make with it!
What Is Cottage Cheese?
Cottage Cheese hit popularity in the 70’s but the demand has since died down.
The same as other cheeses, it made from milk and the rennet (certain type of enzyme, although vinegar or lemon juice can be used as well). The enzyme causes the curds and whey to separate. The curds are given a wash and voila! You have yourself cottage cheese! You can enjoy it as it is or get creative by adding different ingredients, i’ll make some suggestions soon!
Cottage cheese is simple and easy to make as it doesn’t go through any ageing process like most cheeses. You can make it at home or if you you can’t be bothered with that like me, you can easily pick it up from supermarkets!
I buy my cottage cheese from Aldi super markets or if they’ve run out, I pick it up from Coles supermarkets instead! I try and go for the ones that are lower in fat and higher in protein.
What Does Cottage Cheese Taste Like?
Cottage cheeses can come with many different additives, such as cream, herbs or extra salt, which can alter the flavour but it usually has a mild, fresh, slightly salty and creamy flavour.
It doesn’t have the tanginess of yogurt or the sharpness of aged cheeses like cheddar. Instead, it offers a clean, fresh taste that serves as a versatile base for both sweet and savoury dishes.
The curds give it a creamy, lumpy and soft texture.
I like to think of it as a cross between yogurt and cheese, but not as sharp as cheese or tangy as yogurt.
Cottage cheese is so versatile. It can be enjoyed by itself or mixed with various topping and seasonings, or incorporated into recipes.
